WHY
our story
OroCocoa Ltd is the product of several people with a passion for helping others. The story began many years ago when a young PNG national, Elijah Sarigari visited Australia to gain training in the field of agracultural. He was sponsored by the Geelong Rotary Club as a Rotary International project. In visiting Australia, Elijah became friends with several passionate Rotarians. Over the course of the following years, many trips by groups of Rotarians helped with water and other worthwhile projects. Several of the Rotarians that had visited PNG over a number of years could see that the work Rotary International (and other organisations) was doing was very worthwhile but there was more to do. OroCocoa Ltd was born as a non-Rotary involved registered PNG company with the backing of non-Rotary finacing, The expectation was that the company would become a successfull major locally owned business, contributing to the advancement of the PNG living standards and economy.
To date there has been no PNG government or government department assitance of any kind. While there has been much talk about how PNG needs to progress in agraculture by the government, no assitance has been forthcoming. While the bussiness has attraced the attention of several polititions at all levels of government, nothing but words have been the result so far. Should this change we will be very greatfull and be excited to acknolage those involved.
OroCocoa Ltd is a PNG registered company. This means the company is majority PNG national owned. As we see it, the cacao/cocoa industry in PNG is going to develop significantly in the short and longer term. We believe it is in our peoples interest to have PNG nationals own these businesses and have our traditional farms given the oppotunity to make a respectable living. We have seen what happens when foreign companies take control.
The underlying reason OroCoco Ltd was formed is to provide employment oppotunities withing the business and to provide a pathway for traditional farmers to grown cacao and be able to sell their product at a fair price. Making a profit for the shareholders is not an expectation.
We support our people and we support our enviroment.
